MELUNGEON HERITAGE ASSOCIATION

The Melungeon Heritage Association (MHA) is a non-profit organization documenting and preserving mixed-ancestry peoples’ history and cultural legacy. The MHA has held annual conferences throughout Appalachia since 1997. Their most recent union/conference was in Johnson City, TN and they’ll be gathering in Tazwell, VA for the 2026 event.
The MHA also has a podcast, Melungeon Voices, which is now entering its 6th season! The podcast brings extraordinary stories, history, and cultural insights from an array of voices within the Melungeon and mixed-ancestry communities. You can listen to past episodes by checking out the archive! Transcripts are also available.
